Intel and other prominent tech brands join the IP for Smart Objects (IPSO) Alliance to advocate for the interoperability of smart objects

Monday, July 20th, 2009

“An alliance of companies promoting embedded Internet Protocol in smart devices, like military sensors and home appliances, has added 12 new member organizations including Intel Corp.

The Internet Protocol for Smart Objects (IPSO) Alliance, formed in September 2008, evangelizes the idea that an entirely IP-based network makes it easier for dissimilar devices to communicate with each other, instead of being hindered by proprietary and ad hoc protocols.”

Book Review: The Internet of Things: From RFID to the Next-Generation Pervasive Networked Systems (Wireless Networks and Mobile Communications)

Monday, July 20th, 2009

“Ubiquitous and pervasive technologies such as RFID and smart computing promise a world of networked and interconnected devices. Everything from tires to toothbrushes could soon be in communications range, heralding the dawn of an era in which today’s Internet of People gives way to tomorrow’s Internet of Things — where billions of objects will have the ability to report their location, identity, and history over wireless connections.”

RFID technology sales continue to surge with expected growth to reach $5.56 billion in 2009

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

“Despite the sluggish economy, global sales of RFID technology are expected to grow 5 percent to $5.56 billion in 2009. According to IDTechEx, the surge in sales will be accomplished despite the world’s largest RFID project — the $6 billion China National ID card scheme — being completed a year earlier.  The United States heads the list of RFID projects, including a $428 million contract issued by the U.S. Army Program Executive Office-Enterprise Information Systems for a contract for the Radio Frequency Identification III (RFID III) program. Currently, RFID tags are attached to approximately 125,000 shipments of U.S. military supplies each week.”

ON World predicts that by 2012, global WSN products and services for the Smart Home will be worth $6 billion

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

“Multi-billion dollar smart grid and home health initiatives are driving the Smart Home market despite a challenging economy, according to ON World. The energy crisis and out-of-control healthcare spending have governments and the private sector scrambling to develop smart technologies such as Wireless Sensor Networking (WSN) that pay for themselves in months, not years. In 2012, ON World predicts that global WSN products and services for the Smart Home will be worth $6 billion.”

The ZigBee Alliance is developing technology that is set to be the first step in creating a global standard for energy harvesting devices

Monday, June 29th, 2009

“The ZigBee(R) Alliance, a global ecosystem of companies creating wireless solutions for use in energy management, commercial and consumer applications, today announced development of the ZigBee Green Power feature set to establish a global, standard technology for self-powered devices operating through energy harvesting techniques. These devices will communicate seamlessly with existing ZigBee and ZigBee PRO networks and will enable maintenance free, environmentally friendly products that eliminate the need for wires and batteries to power control devices.”

The IP for Smart Objects (IPSO) Alliance demonstrates smart objects at the NeWorld+Interop 2009 expo in Las Vegas

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

“…The sensors were located in Korea, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, England, Canada, and the United States.  IPSO deployed a business intelligence application developed by SAP that collected the readings and interpreted the results graphically at the group’s display booth at the exposition.  Visitors to the booth were able to observe live data readings streamed in from around the world.  Each of the smart objects transmitted information using the IPv6 protocol and did not rely on any proprietary protocols, gateways, or translators whatsoever.  Off-the-shelf hardware was used to create the entire network infrastructure and the Internet was used to connect each of the nodes, across three continents, to IPSO’s Las Vegas booth.”

Motorola states that “in the next five to seven years everything you own will be connected to the Internet” as it looks to expand its wireless business

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

“Motorola is turning to the consumer electronics market as it looks to expand its troubled wireless business in new directions.  On Tuesday morning, the company will announce plans to sell wireless broadband modules that device makers can use to put into consumer electronics products or monitoring devices to provide broadband wireless connectivity. Specifically, Motorola is putting its homegrown wireless technology into embedded modules so that laptops, Netbooks, digital cameras, and other devices can connect to the Internet using 3G HSPA networks, as well as 4G wireless networks using WiMax and LTE technologies.”

The ZigBee Alliance teams up with Texas Instruments to add IP capabilities to its wireless devices, opening the door for lots of exciting connectivity options

Monday, April 27th, 2009

“We’ve seen ZigBee wireless functionality showing up in everything from remote controls to robots, but apparently that was all just the beginning. The Alliance has announced plans to expand its low-power standards to support Internet Protocol, a move that member-company Texas Instruments is apparently quite pleased about — perhaps seeing an opportunity to make up some of those declining sales in the mobile phone area. IP connectivity in all sorts of random devices should open the door for plenty of exciting and new-fangled connectivity options, all of which can only mean one thing: dung beetle MMO.”

AT&T has reaffirmed its support for M2M communication and a future where devices talk to each other wirelessly

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

“AT&T Inc. is working with developers to wirelessly enable a plethora of consumer electronics, representatives said at the International CTIA Wireless show today.  The trend of creating connected consumer electronics has been going on for some time, but AT&T is rethinking how it will charge for the wireless service behind such devices, especially if customers used multiple wireless devices, AT&T representatives said.”
